Fruit Flies, Drain Flies and Gnats

Fruit flies, also known as small flies or gnats, are a common problem in kitchens, especially during late summer and fall. They are attracted to ripe or fermenting fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, melons, squash, and grapes. They can also be attracted to rotting produce, like bananas, potatoes, and onions, that have not been refrigerated. Fruit flies can breed in drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles and cans, trash containers, mops, and cleaning rags, as long as there is a moist film of fermenting material present.

Infestations can start from overripe or previously infested fruits and vegetables brought into the home, or from fruit flies flying in through open windows or doors. Fruit flies can be a nuisance and may also contaminate food with bacteria and other harmful organisms.
